A Few of my Favorite Things:: Holiday Round-Up (Part1)

When the dog bites,
When the bee stings,
& I'm feeling sad...

I simply remember my favorite things,
and then I don't feeeeeel--
soooooo bad!

So, I know that it's been awhile since the close of "the holidays." Devastating! I'm such an irritating holiday fiend.
Confession: I still have my Christmas tree up. Yes, you read that correctly. I'm not apologizing. I love the damn tree. I'm beginning to remind myself of the hilarious John Roberts in "The Christmas Tree."
Watch this, it's hysterical. And scarily, we're all too similar.

Additionally, my birthday is December 30th, so this just amplifies that hectic month, nestled in between Christmas and New Year's. No, I'm not going to tell you how old I turned. A lady never tells, honey. I'm getting up there, I'll admit that, though. Next year, I'll begin reverse-aging. Watch me.

In general, I don't choose favorites well. I like a lot of things...or I don't. And, really, I LOVE everything about the holidays. Holidays anything is not just fine with me, but so darn incredibly warm, bubbly, and thrilling! I shouldn't drink so much coffee. But, I compiled some things that I am pretty pumped about. Of course, I enjoy everything, but the following are some quirky or unexpected items that I received.

These are just a few of my favorite things acquired over this holiday season:
Just a few, like I said. I practiced restraint.

holiday favorite, best holiday gifts, Christmas presents, Ninja blender, Dave's Insanity hot sauce, best hot sauce gift sets, 42 tokens of appreciation, Dave's hot sauces, best new blenders and choppers, apple cider doughnut coffee, The Ninja kitchen appliance

Ninja blender,

Smoothies, dips, etc., here I come! I tend to break every piece of kitchen machinery, and this baby is tough as nails and ready for whatever I throw her.
Some may like it hot, but I prefer it scorching. This is a perfect gift set for the heat-loving people in your life. A bottle for every mood/cuisine! 6 variations for the removal of all taste buds!
Coffee that tastes like doughnuts? It actually does satiate the cravings for those sugar-laden gifts from heaven. MMMM. Delish and cold-weather appropriate.
4. "42 Tokens of Appreciation"
Adorable cards, full of little reminders on how to show your affections and appreciation for another. Notes taken. We can all use a little nudge in the right to direction in order to act out love more rather than just speak. Love is an action, yes?

BCBG spiked black apple, BCBG spikey jewelry box, BCBG Maxazria spiked apple jewelry box, trendy jewelry holder, LeAnn Rimes jewelry box, pretty jewelry holders, getting your jewelry organized, Black Onyx David Yurman cable bracelet, black pearl necklace, Johnny Cash I keep a close watch on this heart of mine lyrics necklace

David Yurman black onyx bracelet, David Yurman cable classic bangle bracelet, David Yurman black onyx collection, designer jewelry black onyx, Bourbon and BOOTS Johnny Cash necklace, best jewelry gift ideas for Valentine's and Christmas, black pearl jewelry, black pearl necklace

Bourbon and Boots Johnny Cash lyrics necklace, Johnny Cash charm necklace, I keep a close watch on this heart of mine necklace, song lyrics jewelry, Bourbon and Boots necklace, best holiday jewelry, new gift ideas, thoughtful unique gifts for Valentine's Day and Christmas

Tough as nails. Literally. It's my very own "big apple." Dark and prickly. But, it houses the daintiest of treasures and keepsakes. Irony, irony, irony. I place the most precious in here.
6. Black pearl necklace
Pearls, yes, are typically white. This Kind of Girl isn't always a white pearl kind of girl. I like something classic but something with an edge...something darker. This was gifted to me by someone who knows me. Metaphor, representation, however you choose to view it. Whoa, we just went deep.
Johnny Cash is one of my favorite artists and human beings of all time, and it is only appropriate that I now can wear "Walk the Line" lyrics around my neck near to my very own (heart). Complete with a little gun charm. Bang for the win. Meaningful and stylish.
8. David Yurman cable classic diamond & black onyx bracelet
This thing is huge. I was shocked. With fine jewelry, bigger is some times just...bigger. But this...it's better. I've begun a love affair with the David Yurman black onyx collection and tend to receive pieces on special occasions. I know that you can definitely find David Yurman on consignment and most definitely, on EBAY. Trust me. You can find authentic, real David Yurman (albeit lightly used), from reliable, reputable online sellers on EBAY. For literally half of the retail price. Give IT a glance! Back to it-- this bracelet is almost a cuff, due to its width and all-around size. And, you know what? It feels extremely special...what it represents is.

What are your favorites from the holidays?
Rings and things?
Roasted turkey with sweet potato casserole?
Conversations with relatives? (This could be your least favorite as well, ha!)

Revel in what you do possess. Material or not.
I'm attempting to remind myself of this throughout the day.
I am grateful. I am, and as much as I adore these "things," and all kinds of "things" at that...
Well, it's most definitely not "everything." It's all "stuff," and that "stuff" doesn't keep my soul warm at night or bring me sheer joy for no reason throughout the day.

So, what now?
Are you left wanting or needing?

We'll be back with MORE holiday goodness in Part 2!

Found: ASOS Sale Accessories Picks

I just returned from a wild bachelorette weekend in Chicago. OK, it wasn't that wild....just fifteen girls flying in from all over the country to celebrate a dear childhood friend's upcoming nuptials!

Wine! Margaritas! Shopping--Dancing--High tea and scones at The Drake Hotel--Laughter--Too much Risotto--Too many tacos, and lingerie-shaped cookies--
Oh, and BRRRR.
I leave New York to face the pounding snow in Chicago, and I return from Chicago to the blizzard-matron, Janus, here in New York. The whole city of New York City has been practically shut down for two days! Really? I know, I know. A little overkill. But, there's one word that holds the power to thaw even the iciest of shivering fingers and toes--

 Sale.
Ahhhhh, the sweetness of that single word.
Say it with me aloud now,
SALE.
But, I'll one up you--
Online SALE.

That was fun.
What follows will be even more fun.
You can remain inside and avoid the battle of frigid temperatures, totally numb toes, and tripping and flying face-first into piles of snow while others point and laugh.
Who, me?!

ASOS,  (the UK's largest online retailer) touts brands as well as its own affordable men and women's accessories, apparel and home goods line. But, thankfully, the site has expanded its domination worldwide. We can all unite and pledge allegiance to stylish deals. International relations at work. They offer an incredible selection of merchandise. Seriously, whoa.
And, they continually mark down their products in order to continually release new items that we also MUST HAVE. There was a LOT of SALE muck to search through. A lot--as in  over 60,000.
I have done the heavy lifting, eh, clicking for you.
I'm not kidding, I could have clicked and clicked repeatedly all night, with the maximum amount of items featured on every page, and you would have found me dozing, still tapping my raw little fingers. I clicked. And clicked. And clicked, almost on autopilot in front of this illuminated screen, compiling items. But, I put on my metaphorical fashion-Hunter boots, and I waded through the muck.
After emerging with bloodshot eyes from my digital coma, I realized that there are simply way too many wonderful, stylish SALE items to show you. So, here's just a tiny fraction of the accessories I've found for your viewing pleasure.

MORE to come, though!
We still have shoes (shoes! the chorus of angels!) and apparel.

ASOS Sale Accessories:

ASOS Sale picks, Those Kinds of Girls, fashion blogger top picks, ASOS accessories, faux fur stole, leather baseball cap hat, statement gold cuff, bejeweled cuff, New York script necklace, black knit turban, fashionable turbans, how to wear a turban, ShopStyle accessories, dragon ring, neon and diamond necklace, statement collar necklace, best winter accessories, affordable statement accessories pieces, oversized scarf with black and green, girls wearing hats, winter in new York city, NYC fashion style, red leather gloves, black and white gloves with bow, New York fashion writers, hunter green cargo tote, affordable handbags, cocktail rings, cozy knit colorful scarf

Shop 'til you...
Grow too tired?
Then, take a power nap and power through.
I believe in you and your fingers.

Oh, and ASOS is running a 20% off sale on all winter layers!

Stay warm... on the inside.

Well, in terms of beauty, that is.
And, I'd still like to layer on these deliciously cozy layers...soft knits, faux fur. I'm secretly overjoyed that we still have some time to enjoy them.

Today, though, let's facetime.

Two of my current favorite winter routine essentials:
Tints of color and glimpses of shimmer.

http://www.dermstore.com/product_The+Matte+Lip+Color+-+Persistence_49866.htm

I'd never heard of Kevyn Aucoin before this lipstick was gifted to me over the holidays. Where have I been?! I missed this VIP at the party, while I've been a wallflower.  If all products are remotely similar in quality, then, sign me up for all of them. Boom...instant fangirl, like a 14-year-old at a Justin Timberlake concert. I'm obsessed with this shade "Persistence," which is a mauve-ish/lilac purple...although it's a matte lip color, it's still surprisingly moisturizing and velvety. It WON'T dry out your lips, like most others and how MANY of my very favorites unfortunately do.
Also available from Nordstrom HERE and Amazon HERE.

Wearing lipstick:
While I mayyyyyy be a lipstick and rouge-loving, hat-wearing, Golden Girls-quoting old lady (WITH a dog named Blanche!), lipstick IS for everyone. It's more ladylike than gloss and none of those sticky, hair/fuzz/feathers(Hey! Life CAN get wild, sometimes!)/weird flying objects-on-your-mouth moments. That's just plain awkward...for everyone. Lipstick brightens up your face instantly, and if I could choose simply one makeup product to wear for the rest of my days, it would be lipstick.  Created in all colors of the rainbow and MANY more, lipstick can be as sheer & understated or as matte & bold as your sweet (Yeah? Eh...) little heart desires. Seriously, just try it. It's not just for (and all over--eeww!) Great Aunt Jean. This girl swears by it. Scouts honor.

-Prep: lather (oh, yeah!) your lips with balm and rub in circular motions with a tooth brush. Or, you can try a small amount of facial scrub on your lips. This will remove dead skin and all of that other gunky, chappy mess that no one enjoys watching flap around. Moisture, moisturize, moisturize is key! Choose non-drying lipsticks with natural plant-based oils and Vitamin E.
-Line: Choose one in a similar shade (or even a few shades lighter that matches your natural lip color. Also, some cosmetic companies offer an invisible liner, which can then blend into all shades.
-Fill In: You can begin filling in with a light layer of color from your lip liner, if you wish to build extra color protection. Then, apply lipstick. Blot with a tissue lightly. Here, now, a beauty expert advised me that applying a thin swipe of blush over your first layer. This aids in sealing the color, protecting you from looking like a complete and utter trainwreck midday at lunch with your boss, red or orange smeared up to your nostrils, or gasp! at happy hour with that guy you met off of Tender.
Finish: Finally, Put on one last application of lipcolor or more, if you wish to REALLY build that color. Now, you can dab a tiny bit of gloss, or as I prefer, Rose's Lip Balm, in the middle of your lips.

It has the creamy shimmer applicator on one end, and a sponge blender on the other. You never look cakey or overly glittery. I'm envisioning 7th grade roll-on glitter sticks, normally, but this highlighter makes cheek bones look delightfully cheery and anything but middle school. Put on cheekbones, above the eyebrows, and/or down the nose. It blends and builds coverage, so apply it as delicately or as BAM as you wish.
Also available from Sephora HERE and Ulta HERE.

Add a little BB cream, swipes of mascara (Benefit's "They're Real!"), and  Nars blush (I switch around between shades but always return to "Orgasm"), and I'm scurrying out of the door.

Oh, man!
Knock on wood. I've just doomed us all to endless months of winter...this groundhog saw her shadow and has retreated back to the burrow to watch Netflix.
Whether I'm watching Scandal (Don't even start with me!) with Blanche or out on the town, exploring and gallivanting per usual This Kind of Girl,
at least I'll look properly cool & collected.

More of Everything, Please.

"Thinking how it used to be,
Does she still remember times like these?
To think of us again?
And I do."

Miss Blanche flying in her bag, looking pitifully up at me.

And, the eagle has landed back smack dab where it belongs, in New York City,
after migrating down south, to Memphis, Tennessee for nearly two weeks.
Well, the eagle, the fox, and this kind of girl.

The incredible Hulk, I mean, Hercules, has just finished slamming us. It was a one-two-punch. It wasn't all that intense, to be frank. A snow storm. A good one. I didn't need to run out in sweatpants and snow boots to stockpile bread and milk.

Sidenote: Why do people do that anyway? That isn't even a meal...a piece of multigrain with a glass of 2% for breakfast, lunch, and dinner ? Do they actually have nothing else? Are they really afraid of spending 24 hours (at most) at home without another full gallon of milk and another loaf of bread? This ritual is bizarre.

Anyway, I thought that my ears would freeze off before I caught a cab, leaving girls' "spa and bubbly night" in Tribeca as it all came barreling down from the sky.

Hercules storm in New York, NYC snow blizzard, weather in New York, view of the Hudson river
View from the loft apartment in Tribeca, overlooking the empty Westside Highway and the Hudson River.

I couldn't see in front of me, for fear that a million freezing particles would penetrate my eyeballs while consuming my face in heinous frostbite. Blindly, and falling in and over every unforeseen crack and pothole, I eventually found a yellow lit-up beacon of hope--a taxi.
It was glorious, I tell you.

As I looked out into the angelically white streets the next morning and listened to the Satanic-like howls of the snow plows, I was reminded of one of the last runs I went on while in Memphis, my hometown--Read more of my backstory HERE, if you please. The weather there alternated from sunny 50-somethings to overcast 20s. Oddly unpredictable. Well, much like New York, I suppose. But, I love a nice brisk holiday morning run around my parents' neighborhood. It's nostalgic for me and such a heavenly time to collect my thoughts and soak up some of that intangible "home feeling" that I wish I could bottle and take with me...and then market and sell, of course.

Right now, I'm alllll about eggplant and black combinations.

[Work]outfit of the day:

GapFit eggplant shirt long sleeve shirt//GapFit grey zip-up long sleeve jacket// GapFit black ankle-length running pants// Tortoise & Blonde black "Capri" sunglasses (LOVE this affordable eyewear brand!)// New Balance socks// Mizuno running shoes, which my father convinced me to try, considering the amount of miles a week I was putting on my old sneakers.
Of course, as always, he was right. Another win for Dad.

While I own a great deal of lululemon, and I do like it for both its practical use and its clean look(despite its pricey "upscale cool factor," catering to a lot of women who simply wear it for display rather than movement). But, I've also purchased lower lines from Target to Forever 21, all of which perform and look equally cool, and for about a fourth of the price...Sorry, the expensive lululemon logo isn't included. Last Christmas, I was gifted Gap's GapFit athleticwear line, and I've been living in it...I find to be almost an exact match to "that other trendy yet expensive line" and ridiculously tough in terms of shelf-life.  I've just acquired two more pairs of full-length running pants recently (handy in cooler temperatures as opposed to shin-length), some new looser-fitting tanks, and additional long-sleeve training shirts with the thumb holes that I adore for outdoor activities.

Get on those New Year's resolutions...whether it's to simply to be healthier all around, more active, eat cleaner, lose that last holiday eggnog and pecan pie (cough, cough), move more, increase endurance, gain confidence, or simply to just feel your very best...or, at least, BETTER than ever before.

I was listening to the ever-appropriate Zeppelin's "Tangerine" and enjoying the early sun's warmth on my face. It wasn't quite the official New Year yet, but I felt that something was turning over, somersaulting over me, over us.
A seamless, quiet acknowledgment of time, moments, and interactions that had passed.
And, then, with a sigh, and a breeze of soaring, fallen leaves... it began anew. A few blinks of the eye, deep breaths (from the sprinting intervals I was doing), and I felt that transition. Acknowledgment becomes respect, and after respect, it's release.

Since we couldn't clink our champagne glasses together on New Year's Eve,
raise a glass, a warm mug, or just a hand.

Cheers, dear!
